As the 2024 harvest concludes, forward-thinking agricultural enterprises are already laying the foundation for the next season. In the Starozhilovsky District, farmers have completed harvesting on 36,106 hectares, producing a total of 156,465 tons of grain. Against this backdrop of a successful season, LLC “Golden Ear” (Zolotoy Kolos) is making a significant strategic move: it has doubled the area sown to winter wheat, planning to cover 1,106 hectares compared to 518 hectares last year.
This decision is not made in isolation but is built upon the proven success of the previous season. According to Denis Mysin, Deputy General Director of the company, the 518 hectares of the “Viola” variety sown last year yielded nearly 3,000 tons of grain, with an average yield of approximately 60 centners per hectare (6 t/ha). A standout field of 112 hectares achieved a record 69 centners/ha (6.9 t/ha), demonstrating the high-yield potential of their practices. This success is attributed to a disciplined agronomic approach. The expansion is strategically planned after optimal predecessors like flax and peas, a practice strongly supported by agronomic science. Research from institutions like the University of Saskatchewan highlights that such crop rotations help break pest and disease cycles, improve soil structure, and enhance nutrient availability, directly contributing to higher wheat yields.
Furthermore, the farm is placing a strong emphasis on seed quality and varietal renewal. This year, they have purchased the promising wheat variety “Boyarka” for sowing on 15 hectares. Investing in new, high-class seeds is a critical step for maintaining genetic yield potential. The Global Seed Society’s 2024 report emphasizes that varietal renewal is one of the most cost-effective ways for farmers to achieve annual yield gains of 1-2%, combating genetic stagnation. The farm’s commitment to this principle, combined with timely sowing operations carried out with modern equipment like the Amazone seeding complex, positions them for another successful season.
The strategy employed by LLC “Golden Ear” offers a valuable blueprint for productive agriculture. Their decision to double the winter wheat area is a calculated risk based on solid data from the previous year and sound agronomic principles. The focus on superior crop rotation, investment in high-quality seeds, and the introduction of new varieties demonstrates a holistic approach to farm management that prioritizes long-term soil health and genetic advancement over short-term gains. For agronomists and farm owners, this case reinforces that sustainable yield increases are achieved through integrated strategies where expansion is supported by meticulous planning and technological investment.
