In a major development for Argentina’s agricultural industry, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs (MARA) of the People’s Republic of China has updated its list of approved biotech corn activities to include all such activities from Argentina. This approval paves the way for Argentine exporters to fully participate in the Chinese market, as Chinese importers can now obtain biosafety certificates for all biotech corn products used in Argentine production.

Key events

Approval of upcoming events
China’s approval covers two recent pending biotech developments in corn: MON-87411 and DAS-59122-7. With these additions, the full range of Argentine biotech corn is now recognized and approved for import into China.

Expanded export opportunities

This development significantly expands export opportunities for Argentine corn producers. Now that China’s vast market has become accessible, exporters can expect increased demand for their biotechnologically improved corn products.

Joint efforts

The approval was the result of coordinated efforts by Argentina’s Bioeconomy Secretariat, the Agricultural Advisor at the Argentine Embassy in Beijing and the country’s export sector. This collaboration included:

  • Providing official documentation.
  • Exchange of up-to-date information on the status of registrations.
  • Efforts to ensure operational feasibility, which contributed to a successful approval process.

Market implications

China’s recognition of all Argentine corn biotechnology activities highlights the importance of biotechnology in agriculture and its role in meeting global food demand. According to [related source], China’s corn imports are rising, reflecting the country’s growing need to import agricultural products to support its large population and growing consumption.

Impact on Argentine agriculture

Economic growth

The approval is expected to provide a significant economic boost to Argentina’s agricultural sector. Since China is one of the world’s largest importers of corn, the ability to export biotech corn without restrictions opens up significant revenue streams for Argentine farmers and agribusinesses.

Biotechnological advances

Argentina is a leader in agricultural biotechnology, developing a variety of genetically modified crops that offer benefits such as pest resistance and increased yields. Recognition from China validates these achievements and encourages continued investment in biotechnology research and development.
