Partnership Aims to Promote Safe and Effective Adoption

In a significant development for Australia’s agricultural sector, the Tractor and Machinery Association of Australia (TMA), Grain Producers Australia (GPA), and the Society of Precision Agriculture Australia (SPAA) have forged a three-year partnership. This collaboration extends the initial period that saw the creation of Australia’s pioneering Code of Practice for Agricultural Mobile Field Machinery with Autonomous Function in 2021.

The code, a result of extensive industry consultation and collaboration, was designed to facilitate the safe integration of autonomous tractors and machinery into Australia’s field-based plant industries. Addressing critical public-interest concerns such as farm safety, the code represents a strategic initiative led by GPA. According to GPA RD&E spokesperson Andrew Weidemann, the partnership aims to raise awareness and understanding of autonomous machinery across the grains industry and broader farming sectors in Victoria and beyond.

“After its development and subsequent launch in 2020, the code underwent further refinements based on feedback from industry stakeholders,” noted Weidemann. “Now, our focus is on promoting the code as an industry-driven framework that supports the practical implementation and ongoing development of autonomous technology in agriculture.”

Gary Northover, TMA’s executive director, highlighted the proactive steps planned under the partnership, including an annual grower survey to gauge perceptions and awareness regarding autonomous technology. “Our members are committed to collaborating with GPA and SPAA to achieve common objectives as autonomous farm machinery transitions from concept to commercial reality,” Northover affirmed.

Beyond surveys, the partnership intends to roll out various communication strategies and engagement initiatives aimed at fostering dialogue and enhancing understanding among stakeholders. By building on current momentum, the alliance seeks to ensure that the code remains adaptive and relevant, facilitating future innovations and partnerships that drive technology adoption and benefit growers nationwide.
