AirAgri, developed by brothers Paul and James Diamond, is transforming farm safety with its advanced technology, aiming to prevent tragedies and enhance emergency response on farms.

In the agricultural community, the news of farmers dying alone on their farms due to medical emergencies, accidents, or other incidents is a shared sorrow. This stark reality prompted Paul and James Diamond to create AirAgri, a revolutionary safety solution that recently earned WorkSafe Victoria’s prestigious 2023 Commitment to Workplace Health and Safety on a Farm award.

For a monthly fee of $39.95 per farm plus $1.50 per day per personal locator device, AirAgri provides critical answers to two essential questions: How is the farmer doing, and where is the farmer located?

Golden Hour Priority

Based in Mansfield, Victoria, the Diamond brothers are third-generation graziers who manage a 1000ha property specializing in Angus cattle and Merino sheep. Their extensive experience in both high country and flatland farming informed the development of AirAgri, which aims to bridge the technological gap between farm equipment automation and personal safety measures.

According to James Diamond, the effectiveness of farm equipment automation pales in comparison to the urgency of responding to a serious farm incident within the “golden hour.” This critical period directly impacts the outcome when a farmer or worker is incapacitated or stranded in a communication dead zone.

AirAgri’s software monitors user activity for abnormal behavior, such as prolonged inactivity, which could signal a medical emergency. By triggering alerts promptly, AirAgri aims to prevent fatalities and ensure timely medical assistance reaches those in need.

Challenges Addressed

James Diamond, leveraging his technological expertise, and Paul Diamond, with a background in animal science and farm management, identified three primary challenges in farm safety technology: connectivity, feedback efficiency, and microclimate adaptation.

  1. Connectivity: AirAgri utilizes the direct-to-satellite Iridium network, ensuring reliable communication independent of cellular networks. Each unit includes a manual SOS button for immediate alerts, enabling swift responses from on or off-farm parties.
  2. Feedback Efficiency: The platform’s “digital twin” of the farm provides real-time situational awareness, pinpointing users’ locations and identifying potential hazards like flooded creeks or steep terrain.
  3. Microclimate Adaptation: Recognizing the influence of tasks and environmental conditions on safety, AirAgri incorporates features like voice analysis to monitor fatigue levels, helping farmers gauge their readiness and safety while working.

User-Centric Design

AirAgri is designed to be user-friendly, catering to a wide range of users, including older generations unfamiliar with complex technology. Its practicality extends to simple operation—farmers can charge and wear it alongside other personal items like hearing aids.

With approximately 300 users across Australia, AirAgri has garnered attention from diverse farms, from small family holdings to large corporate operations. After three years of refinement and a recent public launch, AirAgri continues to expand its influence, engaging with industry bodies to integrate its technology into broader safety initiatives.

Future Outlook

Looking ahead, AirAgri aims to integrate its services into state and national membership structures, further embedding farm safety as a core component of agricultural operations. As the platform evolves, its rental model ensures continuous support and upgrades, accommodating diverse user needs and enhancing overall safety in farming communities.
