Notably, Gary Lang from Wickepin, Western Australia, has been appointed as the new chair of the Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) Western Region Panel. Lang, who joined the panel in 2020, will take over the role in September 2024 from Darrin Lee, who has served as chair since 2018.
GRDC Board chair John Woods praised Lang’s appointment, recognizing his substantial contributions to ensuring GRDC investments align with the priorities of western region growers. Lang, with 42 years of experience as a grower and significant involvement in the Facey Group, brings a wealth of knowledge and dedication to his new role.
Global Representation and Recognition
In another significant move, Fiona Simson, the immediate past president of the National Farmers’ Federation (NFF), has been elected as the Vice President of the World Farmers’ Organisation (WFO). Simson’s election at the WFO General Assembly in Rome marks a milestone as she becomes the first Australian to hold this position. NFF President David Jochinke highlighted that Simson’s role would amplify the voice of Australian farmers in international agricultural policy discussions.
Simson, who has previously served on WFO’s women and youth committees and as the Oceania representative on the WFO Board, emphasized the critical need for farmers to present a united front on global issues like climate change, food security, and sustainability.

The grain industry also mourns the loss of Frank Hadley, a pioneer of the Australian cotton industry, who passed away at 97. Hadley, originally from California, played a pivotal role in establishing the Namoi Cotton Cooperative and Cotton Seed Distributors. His unwavering commitment to the cotton industry leaves an enduring legacy.
Additionally, the Royal Agricultural Society of Western Australia has inducted the late Michael Leslie Poole into the WA Agricultural Hall of Fame. Poole, who passed away in 2022, made significant contributions to agricultural productivity and the expansion of canola farming in WA. The Zero Net Emissions Agriculture Cooperative Research Centre (ZNE-AgCRC) has announced its inaugural board, including new directors Nick Austin, Kat Giles, Melinee Leather, and Chris Murphy. Chair and founding director Deb Cousins highlighted the expertise and diverse backgrounds of the new board members, who will drive the initiative aimed at achieving net-zero emissions in agriculture.
In another notable appointment, Tim Gurney has joined Agfert Fertilizers as Chief Officer for Business Growth and Relations. Gurney’s role will focus on expanding Agfert’s supply chain and promoting its N-shield urea technology, which aims to reduce emissions and improve nitrogen uptake in crops.
