In a concerted effort to bolster wheat production, a delegation of 13 national wheat experts embarked on field visits across Hebei province, encompassing areas such as Shijiazhuang, Hengshui, Cangzhou, and Xinji. Their mission: to offer hands-on guidance to farmers, emphasizing the importance of adopting scientific and tailored management strategies to enhance wheat yields.

During an early morning visit to Niufangzhuang village in Yuanshi County, Shijiazhuang, the expert team meticulously assessed the growth conditions of wheat seedlings. Engaging directly with local farmers, they underscored the significance of scientific planting techniques. Liu Luxiang, the chief scientist of the National Wheat Industry Technology System, observed that the overall condition of winter wheat in Hebei this year is exceptionally promising. He noted an increase in the selection and cultivation of high-quality wheat varieties, laying a solid foundation for a bountiful summer grain harvest.

However, Liu also cautioned farmers to remain vigilant. Despite the favorable growth trends, he emphasized the necessity of monitoring weather changes and maintaining diligent field management. He highlighted the importance of implementing practices such as “one spray and three defenses” and being prepared for potential challenges like late spring cold snaps, dry hot winds, and issues during the harvest phase.

This initiative aligns with the second year of the national campaign aimed at increasing per-unit yields of grain and oil crops. Hebei province has been proactive in promoting technologies such as integrated water and fertilizer management and water-saving irrigation. The province also encourages large-scale grain producers to lead and support surrounding farmers, aiming for widespread improvements in yield. Li Hui, the chief scientist of the Hebei Wheat Industry Technology System, reported that recent assessments across 12 counties in Hebei revealed that large-scale farming operations have effectively implemented precise planting, pre- and post-sowing compaction, and meticulous water and fertilizer management, all contributing to enhanced wheat growth.

Looking ahead, Hebei plans to leverage various new agricultural entities to guide cooperatives, family farms, and service organizations in adopting new high-yield varieties, technologies, and equipment. By integrating optimal land, seed, cultivation methods, and machinery tailored to specific regions and crops, the province aims to boost per-unit yields and achieve the overarching goal of high grain production.

The concerted efforts of agricultural experts and the adoption of advanced farming practices in Hebei province are paving the way for significant enhancements in wheat yields. Through continuous guidance, technological integration, and collaborative initiatives, Hebei is setting a benchmark for sustainable and efficient grain production, ensuring food security and prosperity for its farming communities.
