Minister of State James Browne advocates for Ireland’s involvement in European justice initiatives and addresses critical issues at EU Justice Ministers’ gathering.

Minister of State for Law Reform James Browne represented Ireland at a recent meeting of EU Justice Ministers in Luxembourg, where key discussions on justice, international cooperation, and security took center stage. The meeting saw significant developments, including Ireland’s progress towards joining the European Public Prosecutor’s Office (EPPO) and its active participation in addressing pressing global challenges.

One of the pivotal agenda items was focused on “Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine: fight against impunity.” Minister Browne underscored Ireland’s unwavering support for international justice efforts, emphasizing the importance of ensuring the International Criminal Court (ICC) has the necessary resources to fulfill its mandate effectively. Ireland’s commitment was demonstrated through substantial voluntary contributions aimed at bolstering the ICC’s operations and supporting investigations, particularly in conflict zones like Ukraine.

Minister Browne also addressed the critical issue of combating drug trafficking and organized crime, highlighting Ireland’s proactive stance under the Belgian Presidency’s leadership. He emphasized Ireland’s priorities in dismantling criminal networks and preventing the exploitation of children and young people by criminal elements. Recent legislative advancements in Ireland, including laws criminalizing adults who groom minors into criminal activities, reflect the country’s commitment to protecting vulnerable populations and strengthening law enforcement capabilities.

The meeting provided a platform for EU Justice Ministers to exchange views, coordinate efforts, and advance shared objectives in promoting justice, security, and rule of law across Europe. Minister Browne’s participation underscored Ireland’s proactive role in shaping European justice policies and enhancing international cooperation in combating transnational crime.
