Ministers Foley and Naughton herald a significant milestone in special education infrastructure with the approval of Ábalta Special School’s new campus in Galway.

Minister for Education Norma Foley TD and Minister of State for Special Education and Inclusion Hildegarde Naughton TD have jointly announced the approval of a new permanent school facility for Ábalta Special School in Galway. Currently housed in temporary accommodations, the school will relocate to a purpose-built campus at Gauraun South, Oranmore, Co. Galway, sharing grounds with Galway Educate Together Secondary School. This collaborative campus approach aims to enhance integration opportunities for students.

The new Ábalta Special School will accommodate up to 26 classes, significantly expanding its capacity to serve children and young people with special educational needs in the region. The project is part of the ADAPT Programme, which prioritizes accelerated delivery through strategic architectural planning and professional project management.

Minister Norma Foley expressed her enthusiasm for the project, highlighting its role in providing a conducive learning environment and broader educational opportunities for students and their families. She emphasized the government’s commitment to inclusivity and quality education for all.

Minister Hildegarde Naughton underscored the significance of the new school building in supporting students with special needs, marking a substantial advancement in educational infrastructure funded through Budget 2024.

The announcement reflects a concerted effort to meet the educational needs of diverse learners, fostering a supportive and inclusive environment within the Galway community.
