Prime Minister Announces Continued Financial Aid Amidst EU Negotiations

Prime Minister Boyko Borissov reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting Bulgaria’s tobacco growers during a recent session, highlighting ongoing financial aid initiatives. This support, which amounts to over BGN 71 million under the transitional national tobacco aid scheme, aims to bolster nearly 40,000 farmers across the country.

Tsvetan Filev, Chairman of the National Association of Tobacco Producers, expressed gratitude for the consistent aid, emphasizing its critical role in sustaining the industry. He noted Bulgaria’s proposal to the European Commission for extending the support scheme for an additional two years, a move backed by Minister Taneva to ensure continuity into the new Common Agricultural Policy programming period.

Negotiations with the European Commission concluded with an agreement to extend the aid over the next two transitional years, benefiting growers of “Kaba Kulak”, “Burley”, “Virginia”, and “Basmi” tobacco varieties cultivated during the reference period of 2007-2009. Eligibility criteria include production during at least one of these years, governed by Bulgaria’s Tobacco and Tobacco Products Act.

Minister Desislava Taneva highlighted a significant development: Tsvetan Filev’s appointment as the first Bulgarian to lead the European branch organization of tobacco producers and processors, effective March 15.

The financial aid program ensures that tobacco produced meets regulatory standards and supports market competitiveness, reflecting Bulgaria’s strategic support for its agricultural sectors amidst evolving EU policies.
