As the agricultural calendar shifts to September, farmers are poised to capitalize on early pea cultivation, which offers substantial profits with minimal investment. The last week of September to the first fortnight of October is an ideal time for sowing peas. This article explores five high-yielding pea varieties that can provide farmers with impressive returns, potentially reaching yields of 110 to 120 quintals per hectare.

1. Pant Matar-155

Developed through the hybridization of Pant Matar-13 and DD R-27, Pant Matar-155 is a dwarf variety known for its early flowering and disease resistance. Flowers appear within 30 to 35 days after sowing, with the first harvest occurring around 50 to 55 days. Each pod typically contains 5 to 6 seeds, yielding approximately 10 tons per hectare. The variety is especially resilient against fungal infections and pod borer attacks, making it a reliable choice for farmers looking for a robust option.

2. Arkel

Arkel is a European variety characterized by its sweet taste and fast maturation. Farmers can expect to harvest this variety 60 to 65 days after sowing. The pods are sword-shaped, measuring 8 to 10 cm in length and containing 5 to 6 seeds each. Known for its excellent taste, Arkel is popular in markets and can yield significant profits.

3. Kashi Nandini

Another promising early variety, Kashi Nandini allows for efficient harvesting as all the pods mature simultaneously, eliminating the need for multiple harvests. This variety is ready for harvest about 60 to 65 days after sowing, producing 7 to 9 seeds per pod. With potential yields of 110 to 120 quintals per hectare, Kashi Nandini is an excellent choice for farmers seeking high productivity and ease of management.

4. Pusa Shree

Introduced in 2013, Pusa Shree is well-suited for the plains of North India. This variety matures within 50 to 55 days, yielding between 20 to 21 quintals of green pods per acre. Each pod contains 6 to 7 seeds, making it a valuable crop for both domestic consumption and commercial sales.

5. Pant Matar-13

Pant Matar-13 is another early variety that has gained recognition for its high yield potential and disease resistance. Farmers can expect to start harvesting about 55 to 60 days post-sowing, with an average yield ranging between 90 to 100 quintals per hectare. The resilience of this variety makes it suitable for various growing conditions, enhancing its appeal among farmers.

September is an opportune time for farmers to initiate early pea cultivation. By selecting high-yielding varieties such as Pant Matar-155, Arkel, Kashi Nandini, Pusa Shree, and Pant Matar-13, farmers can optimize their production, achieving yields of up to 120 quintals per hectare. Implementing these scientifically recommended practices not only ensures economic benefits but also enhances sustainability in agricultural practices.
