Farmers in China’s Shandong Province have pioneered an innovative cropping system that challenges conventional wheat-corn rotations. The “Three Crops, Three Harvests” (三作三收) model—developed by farmer Liu Tingyi at Zhang Shoufeng Family Farm in Guangrao County—enables three harvests per year (winter wheat, spring corn, and summer corn) on the same land, significantly boosting yields without sacrificing wheat productivity128.

How It Works

The system optimizes space, light, water, and nutrients through precise field management:

  • October: Winter wheat is sown in 8-row strips, leaving 2-row gaps for spring corn14.
  • April: Spring corn is planted in the gaps, coexisting with wheat for ~50 days1.
  • June: After wheat harvest, summer corn is planted in the original wheat rows, growing alongside spring corn for 50–60 days110.
  • October: All crops are harvested, completing the cycle.

Key Innovations Driving Success

  1. Precision Planting & Machinery Adaptation
    • Traditional farm equipment was modified to fit the 3.6-meter planting units (2.4m wheat, 1.2m corn)110.
    • Customized seeders perform five operations at once: sowing, fertilizing, mulching, weeding, and drip-tape laying1.
  2. Optimal Crop Varieties
    • Wheat: Dwarf, lodging-resistant “Malan No.1” (亩产 1,173.53斤 in 2025)4.
    • Corn: High-density hybrids like “Dongdan 1331”, achieving 547 kg/亩 (spring) and 705 kg/亩 (summer) in 202410.
  3. Smart Irrigation & Fertilization
    • Drip irrigation + water-fertilizer integration ensures crops receive precise nutrients without competition18.
    • This reduces water use by 40% and fertilizer by 30% compared to traditional methods35.

Economic & Yield Benefits

  • 2024 Results: 1,878 kg/亩 (3 crops), 350 kg more than traditional rotations18.
  • 2025 Projections: Higher yields due to improved techniques and expanded trials (1,000 acres in Guangrao)810.
  • Profit Increase: $120–180/acre from the extra corn harvest8.

Challenges & Future Expansion

  • Labor & Machinery: Requires specialized equipment and skilled operators1.
  • Government Support: Shandong is funding 500-acre pilot projects and technical training10.
  • Global Potential: Similar climates (e.g., U.S. Corn Belt, Europe) could adopt this model with localized adjustments.

The “Three Crops, Three Harvests” system is a game-changer for grain production, proving that smart agronomy, precision farming, and adaptive machinery can push yields beyond traditional limits. As climate change and food security concerns grow, such innovations will be crucial in maximizing land productivity sustainably.
