Response to Customer Feedback Prompts Major Corporate Shifts
Tractor Supply Co., one of the leading rural retail chains in the United States, has announced a significant change in its corporate strategy by withdrawing its carbon emission reduction goals and ending its diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives. The Brentwood, Tennessee-based company, which operates 2,300 locations, cited customer feedback as the primary reason for these changes.
“We have heard from customers that we have disappointed them. We have taken this feedback to heart,” the company said in a recent statement. This decision comes after facing criticism in conservative media.
In re-evaluating its corporate interactions and social stances, Tractor Supply Co. has decided to ensure that its activities and charitable giving are directly tied to its business objectives. While retracting workplace diversity submissions to the Human Rights Campaign and ending roles that support DEI initiatives, the company remains committed to certain philanthropic efforts. These include investments in the National FFA Organization, which upholds extensive inclusivity standards.
Previously, in 2021, Tractor Supply Co. had set ambitious goals to reduce its carbon footprint and achieve net-zero emissions by 2024. Additionally, the company had released five-year DEI goals aimed at supporting its corporate vision. Despite these retractions, Tractor Supply Co. has expressed its intention to continue efforts in land and water conservation.
The company’s statement clarified that sponsorship of “pride festivals and voting campaigns,” considered non-business activities, would also cease.
Ryan Goodman, founder of Pride In Agriculture, responded to the news by emphasizing the importance of diversity in rural America. “Rural America thrives on diversity,” he said. “Several larger brands and organizations in the industry have led the way in supporting their employees. These efforts have been encouraging and have paved avenues for greater inclusion of LGBTQ+ people.” Goodman described Tractor Supply Co.’s decision as “disappointing but not surprising.”
Despite Tractor Supply Co.’s shift, other agribusinesses of similar size and value, such as Cargill, John Deere, Tyson, and ADM, continue to maintain DEI principles and are recognized in the Human Rights Campaign Corporate Equality Index for their efforts.
