A massive backlog of unlifted wheat in Muktsar district’s procurement centers has raised serious concerns among farmers. Nearly 60% of procured wheat remains unmoved, with storage facilities stretched beyond capacity and temporary measures being taken to accommodate the surplus grain.

Situation Overview

The current wheat procurement season in Muktsar has witnessed an unprecedented logistical challenge. Out of the total 600,253 metric tonnes (MT) of wheat that arrived at procurement centers, 579,288 MT has been purchased. However, only 235,120 MT has been lifted, leaving a staggering 344,168 MT still stored at mandis.

Temporary storage has been set up at a cremation ground in Badal village due to the overflowing of designated storage facilities. Sukhwinder Singh, District Food and Civil Supplies Controller, acknowledges the issue, attributing it to the heavy influx of wheat over a short span. Efforts are underway to expedite the lifting process, but the current pace remains insufficient to handle the volume of grain.
