In Pakur district, wheat farming is being actively promoted by the local agricultural department, and the early signs indicate a season of prosperous yields. With the favorable climate and timely assistance, this year’s wheat cultivation is expected to bring good returns, benefiting both farmers and the community. The agricultural department has already distributed 499 quintals of wheat seed under the Birsa Seed Exchange and Distribution Scheme, providing essential support to around 1,000 farmers in the district.
Wheat Sowing Progress and Expected Yield
The district has set an ambitious target of cultivating wheat on 9,000 hectares this season. As of now, farmers have already sown wheat on approximately 3,359 hectares, accounting for a significant portion of the overall goal. This includes both large and small plots, with farmers beginning their sowing after the completion of rice harvesting. Pakur and Maheshpur blocks, although lagging behind, are expected to see increased participation in the coming weeks as sowing gains momentum.
The wet soil conditions are proving to be advantageous for wheat cultivation this year, with farmers expressing confidence in achieving a high yield. Farmers like Madhusudhan Mandal and Kamla Rajwada have noted that the moist fields are contributing to better seed germination and strong early growth, boosting their hopes for a successful harvest.
Support from the Government and Agricultural Programs
As part of the government’s initiative, the National Seed Corporation Limited (NSC) has provided wheat seeds at a 50% subsidy to farmers through local LAMPs (Local Area Marketing Points). This program aims to reduce the cost of cultivation and ensure that quality seeds are accessible to all farmers, especially those from rural areas. The seed distribution was carried out in regions like Pakudia, Bannogram, Hiranpur, Damdam, and Dishom FPO Littipada, with close cooperation from the agricultural department.
In addition to seed distribution, the department continues to support farmers by providing essential guidance on proper sowing techniques and pest management. The hope is that these combined efforts will encourage a wider participation in wheat farming and lead to greater yields.
Challenges and Prospects for the Future
While the overall enthusiasm for wheat farming is high, the district is still working towards engaging all farmers, particularly in the less active regions of Pakur and Maheshpur blocks. However, the agriculture department expects the wheat sowing pace to pick up after the rice harvest season ends. Given the favorable weather conditions and the active promotion of wheat farming, this year’s production is likely to meet the district’s goal of 9,000 hectares.
A Bright Future for Wheat Farmers in Pakur
The initiatives by the agricultural department, the timely distribution of quality seeds, and the supportive weather conditions are setting the stage for a successful wheat farming season in Pakur. With increased participation expected from more farmers in the coming weeks, the district is on track to meet its wheat production targets. If conditions continue to remain favorable, this could lead to increased profits for farmers, contributing to their overall financial stability and the growth of the local agricultural economy.
