As of early September 2024, the Ulyanovsk Region has completed over 90% of its grain and legume harvest, with a total yield of 1.7 million tons. This output not only meets the region’s needs but nearly doubles its requirement of 900,000 tons. The harvest has been largely successful despite unfavorable weather conditions, including spring frosts, summer droughts, and heavy rainfall in July and August.
According to Governor Alexey Russkikh, the region is also making significant strides in winter crop sowing, having covered 208,000 hectares—77% of the planned 270,000 hectares. The winter wheat harvest is nearly complete, and farmers are now focusing on spring grains and millet. Although the yield of grains this year stands at 26.9 quintals per hectare, which is lower than last year’s, it reflects the impact of the challenging weather.
The Ulyanovsk Region ranks among the leaders in the Volga Federal District for grain and legume harvest efficiency, holding the fifth place in yield and second place in harvested area percentage. Notably, the highest yields have been recorded in the Cherdaklinsky, Novomalyklynskiy, Sursky, Karsunsky, and Staromaynsky districts.
In addition to grains, the region is actively harvesting technical crops such as soybeans, spring rapeseed, and mustard. Sugar beet harvesting has also commenced, with 455 hectares already harvested, and production expected to meet the needs of the Ulyanovsk Sugar Plant and regional demand.
Furthermore, vegetable and potato harvesting is underway, with vegetables collected from 411 hectares and potatoes from 71 hectares. The region plans to sow 271,000 hectares of winter crops, having already covered 208,000 hectares.
The Ulyanovsk Region has demonstrated impressive efficiency in its grain and legume harvests, achieving significant progress despite adverse weather conditions. With strong yields and ongoing efforts in winter crop sowing, the region is well-positioned to support its agricultural needs and maintain its leadership in the Volga Federal District.
