On August 30, 2024, Dongxiang County in Linxia Prefecture, China, kicked off its ambitious “grain-to-feed” program. This initiative marks a significant shift in local agricultural practices, as the county begins large-scale silage production using state-of-the-art machinery. The event saw a bustling scene in the fields of Nalesi Town and Fengshan Township, where large forage harvesters and packaging machines worked in unison to process corn into high-quality silage.

Advanced Machinery at Work

The transformation process involves a series of sophisticated machines. Forage harvesters efficiently cut and shred the corn stalks, which are then conveyed to packaging machines. These machines compress the chopped corn into tightly wrapped bales, ensuring the feed is preserved and ready for use. The operation, characterized by the rhythmic hum of heavy machinery and the sight of green corn being processed into compact bales, underscores the county’s commitment to modernizing its agricultural practices.

Supporting the Transition to “Grain-to-Feed”

Dongxiang County’s agricultural machinery center has played a crucial role in this transition. By organizing demonstrations and introducing advanced machinery, the center has facilitated the adoption of new technologies. The 2024 “grain-to-feed” initiative is a pivotal year, with the county planning to deploy 16 new machines, including forage harvesters and balers, worth over 6.5 million RMB. This expansion is expected to cover 25,000 mu (approximately 1,667 hectares) of farmland in seven townships, including Nalesi and Fengshan.

The county’s proactive approach includes leveraging national and local subsidy policies to encourage the purchase of advanced equipment. By offering financial incentives, the county aims to support farming cooperatives and family farms in acquiring machinery that aligns with their needs and local conditions.

Impact on Local Agriculture

The “grain-to-feed” initiative has already shown promising results. By converting corn into silage, Dongxiang County has effectively increased the value of corn production and addressed the feed shortages faced by local livestock operations. This shift is expected to lower feed costs for farmers and support the steady growth of the county’s beef and sheep industries.

Ma Wenming, a key official at the county’s agricultural machinery center, highlighted the success of the program so far. He noted that the initiative has spurred enthusiasm among local farmers and improved the economic viability of corn cultivation. With the full-scale implementation of this project, Dongxiang County is well-positioned to enhance its agricultural productivity and sustainability.

Linxia’s Dongxiang County is leading the way in agricultural innovation with its “grain-to-feed” program. The successful integration of advanced machinery for silage production is transforming corn from a staple crop into a valuable feed resource, addressing critical challenges in livestock management. This initiative not only boosts local agricultural efficiency but also offers a model for other regions facing similar issues.
