The opening of Agrarian Week in Oryol Oblast was marked by a major agricultural showcase at the Shutilovka Agricultural Experimental Station, where 380 varieties, lines, and hybrids of 19 key crops were displayed. This event brought together farmers, agronomists, agricultural engineers, and scientists from across Russia and abroad, highlighting the critical role of domestic seed breeding in boosting crop productivity and food security.

Key Highlights from the Event

  • Diverse Crop Portfolio: The exhibition featured winter rye, winter wheat, triticale, spring barley, spring wheat, oats, peas, lupins, soybeans, lentils, buckwheat, millet, corn, and sunflower, among others.
  • National Collaboration: The varieties were contributed by 28 Russian research institutions, including the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS), demonstrating a strong push for localized, climate-resilient seed development.
  • Expansive Field Trials: The Federal Scientific Center for Legumes and Cereals (FNC ZBK) is conducting 99 field and vegetative experiments this year, covering genetics, breeding, and cultivation technologies. Additionally, 303+ hectares are dedicated to multiplying new and promising varieties, including:
    • Soybeans: Orleya, Osmon, Mezenka
    • Lentils: Zhemchuzhina
    • Peas: Izumrudny 22, Monarch, Yaguar
    • Buckwheat: Devyatka, Dasha, Diana
    • Winter Wheat: Scepter 2
    • Spring Wheat: Darya, Feya
    • Spring Barley: Ataman

Why This Matters for Russian Agriculture

Russia has been expanding its seed breeding programs to reduce reliance on foreign varieties, particularly in light of global supply chain disruptions. According to the Ministry of Agriculture (2023), domestic seed production for key crops like wheat and soybeans has increased by 12% since 2020, with a focus on drought-resistant and high-yield strains.

The Shutilovka Station’s field demonstrations will remain open throughout Agrarian Week, offering farmers and researchers hands-on access to cutting-edge agricultural solutions.

The variety fair at Shutilovka Station underscores Russia’s commitment to strengthening its agricultural independence through advanced breeding programs and sustainable farming innovations. By leveraging homegrown research and collaboration, the country is positioning itself as a leader in climate-adaptive and high-efficiency crop production.
