Russia’s rice industry has made remarkable strides in 2024, with the country’s rice harvest reaching an all-time high of over 1.2 million tons. This represents a 17% increase compared to 2023, highlighting the growing efficiency and productivity of Russian rice farmers. Currently, rice cultivation spans approximately 207,000 hectares across the country, with the Krasnodar region being the largest contributor, accounting for nearly two-thirds of the total rice production. In 2024, Krasnodar harvested 829,000 tons of rice, cementing its position as the leader in the nation’s rice industry.

In addition to Krasnodar, other regions such as Chechnya, Dagestan, Primorsky Krai, and Rostov Oblast are also actively engaged in rice production, contributing to the overall growth of the sector. The Russian Ministry of Agriculture has ambitious plans for further expansion. Over the next five years, rice planting areas will grow by 68,000 hectares, reaching a total of 275,000 hectares, with new plantations primarily located in the Astrakhan region and Primorsky Krai. Along with increased acreage, the average rice yield is expected to rise by 10 centners per hectare.

By 2030, Russian rice farmers aim to produce 2 million tons of rice annually. This substantial increase in production is not only intended to meet domestic demand but also to establish a strong export market for Russian rice. The growth in rice production will help ensure that Russia can fully satisfy its internal needs, reducing dependency on imports and positioning the country as a significant player in the global rice market.

The expansion plans come at a time when Russia’s agricultural industry is becoming more efficient and competitive, thanks to advances in agricultural technology and improved farming practices. As a result, the country’s rice production is set to play a pivotal role in global food security, offering high-quality rice at competitive prices.

Russia’s record rice harvest in 2024 marks a milestone for the country’s agricultural sector. With ambitious plans for expansion and increased yields, Russia is positioning itself as a key global producer of rice. These developments not only promise to meet the country’s domestic needs but also offer strong export potential, making Russia an important player in the global rice market.
