Efforts intensify as locust infestations exceed economic thresholds in key agricultural regions.

The Ministry of Agriculture of the Republic of Kalmykia, in collaboration with the branch of the Federal State Budgetary Institution “Rosselkhoztsentr” in the Republic of Kalmykia, has conducted extensive surveys covering 1,800 hectares in the Enotayevsky District of the Astrakhan Region and the Yustinsky District of the Republic of Kalmykia. The surveys have identified locust infestations exceeding economic thresholds on 100 hectares, including 50 hectares within the steppe republic and another 50 hectares in the Astrakhan Region. The Ministry has recommended immediate control measures, as reported by the department’s press service.

Kalmykia, along with the Astrakhan Region, Stavropol Krai, and Dagestan, faces significant challenges from locust pests. Kalmykia ranks first in the Southern Federal District (YUFO) in terms of treated areas, with a total of 522,000 hectares surveyed across the republic. Infestations exceeding economic thresholds have been identified on 26,400 hectares, with control operations conducted on 22,000 hectares. A fleet of 111 pieces of equipment has been deployed, including 5 aircraft for aerial operations.

The Ministry of Agriculture operates a dedicated “hotline” for reporting locust outbreaks and providing consultations. Concerned parties can contact the hotline at +7(989)737-23-88 to report locust sightings or seek guidance.
