Strong Growth in Agricultural Exports Driven by Enhanced Trade Relations
In the first quarter of the current Iranian calendar year, Iran’s agricultural exports have surged significantly, reaching approximately $1.027 billion. This represents a remarkable 37 percent increase compared to the same period last year, reflecting robust growth in the sector. Mohammad Sadeq Ghanadzadeh, Deputy Head of Iran’s Trade Promotion Organization, noted a 19 percent rise in the weight of these exports, according to IRIB.
Key agricultural exports include pistachios, tomatoes, watermelons, apples, and potatoes. The notable increase in export value is partly attributed to improved trade relations with the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU). Data from the Islamic Republic of Iran Customs Administration (IRICA) indicates that during the first two months of the Iranian year, Iran exported 1,562,000 tons of agricultural products valued at $684 million, marking a 28 percent increase in value year-on-year and a 24 percent rise in volume.
Among the top exports, apples, in-shell pistachios, watermelons, field tomatoes, and greenhouse tomatoes have emerged as significant contributors. These items accounted for approximately 6.66 percent of the total weight and 8.53 percent of the total value of Iran’s exports in this period. The previous Iranian calendar year also saw a 22.5 percent increase in the export value of agricultural and food products, totaling around $6.3 billion, according to Ruhollah Latifi of Iran’s House of Industry, Mining, and Trade.
Agro-food products comprised 12.8 percent of Iran’s total non-oil exports last year, with Iraq, the United Arab Emirates, and Russia being the primary importers. Overall, Iran’s foreign trade, including oil and technical engineering services, amounted to $153.17 billion in the last Iranian calendar year.
