New Research Initiatives Aim to Enhance Soil Management Practices and Agricultural Productivity

The Cooperative Research Centre for High Performance Soils (Soil CRC) has announced a substantial investment of $4.1 million into eight new research projects over the next three years. These initiatives are focused on expanding growers’ knowledge of soil issues and exploring innovative solutions to improve soil conditions across Australia.

According to Soil CRC CEO Michael Crawford, these projects build upon the organization’s ongoing efforts to advance soil data analytics, develop novel products and technologies for enhancing soil function, and promote adoption of sustainable soil management practices among farmers. The collaborative nature of Soil CRC ensures that research outcomes are practical and relevant to industry needs.

“This latest investment underscores Soil CRC’s dedication to equipping farmers with the necessary knowledge and tools to make informed decisions on complex soil management challenges,” stated Dr. Crawford. The projects involve 19 of Soil CRC’s participant organizations, contributing a combined $8.7 million in in-kind resources.

The funding will support a range of initiatives, including research led by Federation University to enhance access to high-quality soil data through the Visualising Australasia’s Soils (VAS) project. This effort aims to federate soil data across the region, making it more accessible and useful for research, on-farm decision-making, and policy development. Another funded project, led by Griffith University, will focus on developing organic-based slow-release urea fertilizers tailored for Australian farming systems.

Other projects include research into improving crop phosphorous supply on calcareous soils, accelerating the adoption of Soil CRC innovations among farmers, and creating decision support tools for soil management. Each initiative is designed to maximize the impact of Soil CRC’s research efforts and ensure long-term sustainability in agricultural practices.

The Soil CRC’s ongoing commitment to advancing soil science is crucial for enhancing agricultural productivity and profitability, ultimately benefiting both farmers and the broader industry.
