The agricultural season in Osh Region’s Kara-Suu District has reached a critical phase as farmers begin harvesting the ‘Bagrat’ winter wheat variety. Known for its high yield and superior grain quality, ‘Bagrat’ was sown in autumn 2024 across 22 hectares, with a seeding rate of 220 kg per hectare. According to the Ministry of Agriculture, this variety has demonstrated strong resilience and performance, making it a promising choice for cereal production.

Kara-Suu District has allocated 17,000 hectares out of its total 45,100 hectares of farmland to cereal crops this year, with harvest operations commencing a week ago. The local government emphasizes the importance of adopting high-yield varieties like ‘Bagrat’ to enhance food security and farmer incomes.

To promote best practices, the Department of Agricultural Expertise organized a “Field Day” demonstration, highlighting advanced cultivation techniques for ‘Bagrat’ wheat. Such initiatives aim to encourage wider adoption among farmers, leveraging modern agronomy to maximize output. Globally, improved wheat varieties contribute to ~1-1.5% annual yield growth (FAO, 2023), underscoring the need for innovation in staple crop production.
