In a recent effort to advance agricultural practices, the Gyeonggi-do Agricultural Research and Extension Services’ Income Resource Research Institute conducted a field evaluation meeting on June 17th at the farm of Song Ijin, the president of the Cheongto Oats Association in Yeoncheon County. The meeting attracted over 20 participants, including specialized oats farmers, grain distribution companies, and agricultural technology center representatives, who gathered to assess the growth of rice oats and soybeans and discuss the dissemination of the developed technologies to farms.
The evaluated farm has been successfully practicing double cropping of rice oats and soybeans, with the entire yield being sold under contract cultivation agreements, thus providing a reliable source of raw grains for processors. The Yeoncheon Agricultural Technology Center supports this initiative, seeing the double cropping system as a new income source for northern Gyeonggi Province, aiming to establish high-quality rice oat production zones.
The Gyeonggi-do Agricultural Research and Extension Services has developed a specific cropping system tailored for northern Gyeonggi’s climate, which involves sowing the cold-sensitive rice oats in early March and harvesting them in late June. Immediately after, soybeans are planted and harvested by late October. This system has identified the Jo-yang variety as most suitable for rice oats, while Manpung and Seonyu 2-ho are ideal for soybeans.
Kim Jinyoung, Director of the Income Resource Research Institute, expressed the commitment to this initiative, stating, “We will continue to collaborate with the research institute, agricultural technology centers, distribution companies, and young members of the rice oats and soybean research associations to ensure the double cropping system takes root in the northern Gyeonggi region.”
The field evaluation meeting highlighted the potential of double cropping rice oats and soybeans as a viable agricultural practice in northern Gyeonggi Province. With the support of local agricultural technology centers and the dedication of specialized farmers and research institutions, this innovative approach promises to enhance crop yield, diversify income sources, and contribute to the sustainability of local agriculture.
