Zhangbei County, long known for its oat cultivation, has taken a bold step toward agricultural industrialization by developing a robust oat processing sector. On May 8th, technicians at Zhangjiakou Beta Biotechnology Co., Ltd. were seen operating advanced membrane separation equipment in their purification workshop, a testament to the technological advancements driving this industry.

The Rise of Oat Processing in Zhangbei

The county now hosts four major oat processing enterprises, producing a diverse range of products, including:

  • Oat rice
  • Pure oat flakes
  • Instant oat noodles
  • And more than 20 other value-added goods

This expansion aligns with global trends—the global oat market is projected to grow at a CAGR of 4.5% from 2023 to 2030, driven by rising demand for healthy, plant-based foods (Grand View Research, 2023). China, as one of the largest consumers of oats, is capitalizing on this trend, with Zhangbei positioning itself as a key player.

Innovation at the Core

Inside Beta Biotechnology’s lab, researchers were observed conducting solution decolorization and chromogenic reaction tests—critical steps in refining oat-based products. Such innovations ensure higher quality and broader market appeal. The company’s large-scale production facility, captured via drone photography, highlights the industrial capacity supporting this growth.

Why This Matters for Farmers & Agribusiness

  1. Diversification = Stability – By moving beyond raw grain sales, farmers gain resilience against price fluctuations.
  2. Tech-Driven Efficiency – Advanced processing methods increase yield and profitability.
  3. Meeting Consumer Demand – Health-conscious markets are willing to pay premiums for functional oat products.

A Model for Agricultural Transformation

Zhangbei’s oat industry demonstrates how traditional farming regions can thrive by embracing value-added processing and innovation. For farmers, agronomists, and investors, this serves as a blueprint for turning staple crops into high-value commodities.
