Industry Collaboration to Shape a Sustainable Future for SA Grain Producers

South Australian grain producers and industry stakeholders are invited to provide their insights on the newly released draft SA Grain Sustainability Roadmap. This initiative, commissioned by Grain Producers SA and developed by sustainability consultant Edge Impact, aims to establish a comprehensive plan to ensure the future sustainability of the grain industry in South Australia.

The Grain Producers SA (GPSA) has taken a proactive step in securing the sustainability of South Australia’s grain industry by commissioning a draft Grain Sustainability Roadmap. This project, developed by experienced sustainability consultant Edge Impact, seeks feedback from grain producers and stakeholders to refine and finalize the roadmap.

Brad Perry, GPSA’s Chief Executive Officer, emphasized the importance of this initiative in response to increasing demands from governments, consumers, financiers, and markets for sustainable grain production. “The demand for the grain industry in South Australia to reduce emissions and meet particular climate-related targets continues, and will continue for years to come,” Perry stated.

Perry highlighted that understanding the industry’s sustainability baseline and providing evidence-based advocacy is crucial for controlling the future of South Australian grain production. He noted that collaboration within the industry is essential to identify current challenges and opportunities in sustainability.

Comprehensive Process for Drafting the Roadmap

Edge Impact, recognized for their work on the Emissions Reductions Roadmap for the Australian wine industry, has been tasked with drafting the SA Grain Sustainability Roadmap. This comprehensive plan aims to:

  • Identify and address sustainability challenges within the grain industry.
  • Provide education and support for producers to meet sustainability demands.
  • Communicate the established sustainability credentials of South Australian grain to consumers.

GPSA seeks to gather input from the South Australian grain producer community and key stakeholders to ensure the roadmap is robust and representative of the industry’s needs and capabilities.

Support and Future Steps

The development of the SA Grain Sustainability Roadmap is supported by the South Australian Drought Resilience Adoption and Innovation Hub, part of the Australian Government’s Future Drought Fund. This initiative brings together primary producers, industry groups, researchers, government agencies, universities, agribusinesses, and traditional owners to enhance the drought resilience and preparedness of farms and regional communities in South Australia.
