Collaborative efforts towards sustainable agriculture and supply chain resilience

The Arnott’s Group has announced its participation as a founding partner in Cargill’s SustainConnect program, aimed at advancing sustainable canola oil production across Australia. Launched in February, SustainConnect provides growers with tools, resources, and market access to foster sustainable agricultural practices.

The program not only supports farmers in adopting sustainable practices such as nutrient management, reduced tillage, and crop residue retention but also responds to increasing domestic and international demand for sustainable agricultural products. This collaboration underscores the importance of integrated supply chain partnerships in achieving sustainability goals and delivering enduring benefits to farming communities.

Arnott’s Group has committed to achieving net-zero emissions in its operations by 2040 and across its value chain by 2050. Simon Lowden, Chief Transformation Officer at Arnott’s Group, emphasized the significance of this collaboration with Cargill in enhancing supply chain sustainability in Australia. “Key ingredients like canola oil play a pivotal role in our sustainability efforts,” Mr. Lowden noted. “We envision that as the program evolves, it will catalyze significant industry transformation.”

Australian canola growers participating in Cargill SustainConnect can select from a range of sustainable practices aimed at improving soil health and reducing carbon footprints. These efforts align with Cargill’s global targets to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in its operations by 10% by 2025 and across its supply chain by 30% per tonne of product sold by 2030.

Ben Fargher, Cargill’s Environmental Market Lead for Asia-Pacific, highlighted the potential of agriculture to mitigate climate change while bolstering economic prospects for farmers. “By integrating sustainable practices into our supply chains alongside partners like The Arnott’s Group, Cargill aims to significantly cut emissions and enhance soil resilience for future generations,” Mr. Fargher stated.

Tim Gainsford, a canola grower from Macquarie Valley, shared his perspective on the program: “As farmers, we’re committed to producing food with a lower carbon footprint. Cargill’s SustainConnect program not only recognizes our sustainable efforts but also connects us with leading brands like Arnott’s, which values our sustainable canola.”

Cargill has partnered with Regrow to measure, report, and verify carbon outcomes using advanced technologies like in-field data, remote sensing, and crop modeling. This ensures transparency and accuracy in measuring environmental impacts, supporting both growers and Cargill’s customers in their sustainability goals.

Currently available to canola farmers across New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, and Victoria, the SustainConnect program aims to expand into Western Australia, furthering its impact on sustainable agriculture practices nationwide.
