The agricultural landscape in Dagestan is set to undergo significant changes with the construction of two new rice processing plants, scheduled for completion by 2025. This announcement was made by Mukhtarbi Adzhekhov, the region’s Minister of Agriculture, during a live broadcast from the Central Information Center. These new facilities will be located in Kizlyarsky and Tarumovsky districts, adding to the four existing rice processing plants in the region.
Expanding Rice Processing Infrastructure
Previously, Dagestan had no rice processing infrastructure, which limited the ability of local farmers to capitalize on the full value chain of rice production. With four factories already operational and two more under construction, the region is now positioned to significantly enhance its rice processing capacity. This development is crucial for supporting the growing demand for locally produced rice, not only within Dagestan but also in other regions of Russia.
The new processing plants will provide essential support for the region’s rice farmers by enabling them to process rice locally, reducing dependency on external processing facilities. This will also lead to improved quality control and better access to domestic and international markets.
Increase in Rice Cultivation in 2024
In addition to expanding processing capabilities, rice cultivation in Dagestan has also seen substantial growth. In 2024, over 34,000 hectares were dedicated to rice farming, marking an increase of 1,800 hectares compared to the previous year. This growth reflects the high demand for rice production among local farmers, many of whom are investing heavily in this sector.
Minister Adzhekhov highlighted that rice farming is becoming an increasingly attractive business opportunity for Dagestani farmers, who recognize the potential for higher returns due to the region’s favorable conditions for rice cultivation. Rice has become one of the key crops in Dagestan’s agricultural sector, which continues to benefit from government initiatives and farmer investments aimed at improving productivity and sustainability.
Future Outlook: A Growing Industry
With more processing plants and increased cultivation areas, Dagestan’s rice industry is poised for significant growth in the coming years. The expansion of rice infrastructure aligns with broader agricultural goals in Russia, which focus on enhancing food security, increasing export potential, and supporting local farmers.
As the region moves towards processing and exporting more rice, the local economy stands to benefit from job creation, improved farmer incomes, and a stronger agricultural export profile. The construction of the new plants is part of a broader strategy to position Dagestan as a leading rice producer and processor within Russia.
Dagestan’s commitment to expanding its rice processing and cultivation capacity represents a major step forward for the region’s agricultural industry. With increased investment in both infrastructure and farmland, Dagestan is set to become a key player in Russia’s rice market. The construction of two new processing plants by 2025 will not only benefit local farmers but also contribute to the overall growth of the agricultural sector in the region.
