On September 18, 2024, Boseong County celebrated the first harvest of its ‘Wongchi All-Rice,’ marking a significant milestone in the region’s agricultural calendar. The initial harvest took place on the farm of Kim An-ja (75) in Daesan-ri, Wongchi-myeon, where rice planted on April 16 reached maturity in just 120 days.
Harvest Overview
This year’s harvest is expected to yield approximately 800 tons of Wongchi All-Rice from 122 hectares across 120 farms in Wongchi-myeon. The harvest comes after overcoming several challenges, including frequent heavy rainfall and heatwaves, which have complicated rice cultivation and pest management.
Technological and Agricultural Advancements
Boseong County has employed modern agricultural practices to mitigate these challenges. Notably, drones have been utilized for collective pest control, enhancing the effectiveness of crop management and increasing yield prospects. The support from local government and farmers’ dedication to timely pest control and quality management are anticipated to result in a higher yield compared to the previous year.
Unique Qualities of Wongchi All-Rice
Wongchi All-Rice is distinguished by its preparation method: only glutinous rice is used, which is steamed in a traditional cauldron and then dried for a day before being milled into brown rice. This process enhances the rice’s flavor, texture, and nutritional value, making it a sought-after choice for its wholesome characteristics. The rice benefits from the mineral and nutrient retention during steaming, positioning it as a premium well-being food.
The fertile soil and highland climate of Boseong County contribute to the exceptional quality of Wongchi All-Rice, which accounts for about 70% of the national production. Recognized as Geographical Indication No. 71 in 2010, the brand holds significant value across the country.
