This month, I had the unique opportunity to travel to Peru, a country renowned for its rich culture, stunning landscapes, and agricultural heritage. During my visit, I met an extraordinary individual, Mg.Sc. Hugo Elías, known as HUANUQUEÑO COCA, a distinguished expert in plant breeding, particularly maize. Hugo Elías holds the professional title of Agricultural Engineer and has advanced degrees, including a Master of Science in Plant Breeding.

I was fortunate to visit Hugo Elías’s fields, where he cultivates an impressive variety of maize lines, ranging from yellow and large white Peruvian maize to a unique black variety that can be prepared as popcorn. Witnessing the passion and dedication Hugo Elías has for his work was truly inspiring. He is a man deeply devoted to his craft, pouring his heart, soul, and life into the improvement of maize varieties.

Hugo Elías enthusiastically showcased his vast collection of maize, which includes over 3500 lines and varieties. His enthusiasm was palpable as he explained the characteristics and potential of each type. This collection is not merely a testament to his dedication but also a crucial asset for the future of food security.

I am confident that this article will draw attention to Hugo Elías’s significant contributions and the potential impact of his work. His dedication to developing new maize varieties can significantly enhance food security, not only in the beautiful country of Peru, which I have grown to love for its warmth and the kindness of its people but also in the broader region and potentially around the world.

From the bottom of my heart, I wish my friend in Peru, Hugo Elías, HUANUQUEÑO COCA, continued success in his projects. His work holds the promise of a brighter, more secure future for all.
