In 2024, the wheat harvest in Bulgaria will exceed 6 million tons
Minister Takhov announces a record wheat harvest at the start of the Bread of the World initiative.

With an estimated production of 6.1 to 6.3 million tons of wheat, Bulgaria expects a good harvest in 2024. This forecast highlights the country’s agricultural potential and its significant role in the international grain market.

Speaking about the promising prospects for Bulgaria’s agricultural sector, Minister of Agriculture and Food Dr Georgi Takhov announced that the country’s wheat harvest in 2024 is expected to exceed 6 million tons. This statement was made during the launch of the “Bread of the World” initiative in Zlati Trape, Plovdiv region. According to preliminary data, wheat production is projected at 6.1-6.3 million tons, barley – more than 800 thousand tons.

Dr. Takhov emphasized that it is planned to harvest about 11 million decares (1.1 million hectares) for wheat, and about 1.6 million decares (160 thousand hectares) for barley. Favorable climatic conditions have increased confidence in obtaining high-quality harvests, ensuring that the supply of bread to Bulgaria will be secure. The expected yield per hectare is projected to be more than 500 kg, which is a positive indicator for maintaining stable bread prices.

The Minister also touched upon wheat procurement prices, which are determined by market forces, emphasizing the government’s role in ensuring timely compensation payments to grain producers, thereby ensuring liquidity in the sector. Considering that grain storage facilities are currently 80% empty, there are no concerns about storing the new crop.

Bulgaria continues to be a key player in the global grain market, exporting wheat to more than 30 countries. Minister Takhov expressed optimism about maintaining quotas on imports of Ukrainian grain, which will be discussed at the upcoming Council of Ministers of Agriculture in Brussels.

In addition, the direct payment campaign has attracted a large number of participants, with 42,000 applications submitted to date, covering approximately 3 million hectares. The goal is 3.6 million hectares by the end of the application period on June 30.

The event was attended by key figures, including the governor of Plovdiv, engineer Ilya Zumbliev, the mayor of the Rodopi municipality Pavel Mikhailov, the presidential adviser on agriculture Yavor Gechev, the rector of the Agrarian University, associate professor Dr. Boriana Ivanova and the leaders of the National Grain Association. Producers and the Union of Grain Producers of Plovdiv.

Bulgaria’s projected wheat harvest in 2024 highlights the country’s strong agricultural potential and its key role in global food security. Favorable climatic conditions and effective regulatory support mechanisms provide prosperous prospects for Bulgarian farmers, strengthening the country’s position in the international grain market.
