Prime Minister Kiril Petkov leads discussions on ensuring adequate grain supply and supporting agricultural sustainability.

Prime Minister Kiril Petkov recently chaired a pivotal meeting of the advisory council on grain, focusing on securing sufficient food supplies for Bulgaria amidst challenges in the agricultural sector. The meeting, attended by key government officials and sector representatives, underscored the importance of strategic interventions to stabilize grain markets and alleviate potential shortages.

In attendance were Deputy Prime Minister Assen Vassilev, Minister of Economy and Industry Korneliya Ninova, and Minister of Agriculture Ivan Ivanov, alongside stakeholders from grain production, processing, livestock breeding, and trading sectors. Central to the discussions was the proposal for state intervention in grain procurement to ensure market equilibrium and uninterrupted food supply across the country.

The consensus reached emphasized the necessity for the state to engage actively in purchasing grain to meet domestic demands, thereby supporting farmers and safeguarding consumer needs. Detailed mechanisms for state procurement are set to be refined further in subsequent sessions at the Ministry of Agriculture, aiming to streamline implementation and address logistical challenges.

Prime Minister Petkov reiterated the government’s commitment to enhancing agricultural productivity and fostering value-added production within the sector. Encouraging transparency, he urged stakeholders to report any misconduct or irregularities, underscoring mutual benefits in upholding integrity and efficiency.

The ongoing dialogue signals a proactive approach by the Bulgarian government to mitigate agricultural risks, ensuring resilience in food production and market stability amidst evolving economic landscapes.
