In 2024, Cambodia achieved a major milestone in its agricultural export sector, generating USD 491 million from the export of 651,522 tonnes of milled rice. This marks a substantial achievement for the nation, with 57 companies contributing to the shipment of rice to 68 countries and regions. Among the primary buyers, China remains a key market, showcasing Cambodia’s growing agricultural trade footprint.

Of the rice exported, a significant 76.15% was fragrant rice, a variety highly favored for its aroma and quality. Additionally, 18.7% was white rice, 3.1% parboiled rice, and 1.78% organic rice, with the remaining percentage being other types. The large share of fragrant rice in the export mix highlights Cambodia’s expertise in producing high-quality rice varieties, catering to global demand for specialty grains.

China alone purchased 117,925 tonnes of Cambodia’s milled rice, amounting to USD 75.6 million in revenue. This continued demand from China plays a pivotal role in the stability and growth of Cambodia’s rice industry. Im Rachna, Undersecretary of state and spokesperson for Cambodia’s Ministry of Agriculture, noted that the country’s agricultural exports, particularly to China, have significantly contributed to the development of Cambodia’s agriculture. These exports not only benefit the nation’s economy but also provide farmers with better livelihoods.

Rice is a crucial crop for Cambodia, providing sustenance and income for millions. With global demand for high-quality rice increasing, Cambodia’s rice industry is well-positioned to continue growing. The success of fragrant rice exports and the strong relationships with international markets like China underline the sector’s potential for further expansion.

In the coming years, Cambodia is likely to continue enhancing its rice production and export capabilities, driven by both government policies and private sector investments. As the global demand for rice continues to rise, Cambodia’s role as a key rice exporter looks set to solidify.

Cambodia’s robust performance in rice exports in 2024, especially with its fragrant rice varieties, reflects the strength of its agricultural sector. With China remaining a major buyer and the continuous growth in global rice consumption, Cambodia’s rice industry is expected to thrive, bringing prosperity to its farmers and supporting national economic growth.
