Resilience and Mitigation Efforts: Minister of Agriculture Assesses Impact of Weather Front in Coquimbo

Insights into agricultural resilience and mitigation efforts following recent weather challenges in the Coquimbo region.

June 14, 2024 – Esteban Valenzuela, Minister of Agriculture, conducted a field assessment in the Coquimbo region in response to adverse weather conditions, discussing potential food price increases due to widespread rainfall across the country. Minister Valenzuela reassured that any price hikes would likely be moderate, emphasizing the strength and diversity of Chile’s agriculture sector.

He highlighted government support measures, including direct assistance to 200,000 farmers through INDAP and the Ministry of Agriculture, along with over $300 billion in credits from INDAP and BancoEstado. Immediate relief efforts include the distribution of fodder to affected communities and farmers in the Alto Bio-Bio, Biobío, and Coquimbo regions.

Valenzuela underscored the resilience of winter crops such as potatoes, onions, carrots, and cabbage, reassuring minimal impact from the weather conditions. He urged calmness and encouraged consumers to take advantage of seasonal produce availability.

Impact of Rainfall in Coquimbo During his field visit, Minister Valenzuela observed mitigation efforts in areas affected by the weather front.

“We’ve witnessed excellent regional coordination led by Regional Delegate Galo Luna. Significant rainfall, exceeding 100 millimeters in some areas, will contribute to increased water levels in La Paloma and Cogotí reservoirs. Municipalities have effectively managed water flow, with active streams and minimal significant damage,” noted Minister Valenzuela.

Regional Presidential Delegate Galo Luna emphasized ongoing monitoring efforts due to activated waterways and affected roadways, particularly in Combarbalá where a bridge displacement occurred. Fortunately, no fatalities or major accidents were reported, underscoring the effectiveness of preparedness measures by Public Works.

The ongoing monitoring aims to ensure safety and mitigate further risks posed by active waterways and infrastructure challenges in the region.
