Grilled corn and sweet potatoes are not just snacks but a cherished part of the seasonal experience in the capital. As the chill sets in, the streets of Hanoi are filled with the enticing fragrance of these simple yet beloved treats, available at nearly every street corner and pavement. The aroma alone draws passersby, creating an inviting atmosphere of warmth and comfort.

Young couple Nguyễn Hoàng Tuấn and Bùi Thu Hoài shared their love for winter in Hanoi, noting that the season’s cold winds and the soft sunlight make it the most romantic time of the year. “It’s the best time,” said Tuấn, “where couples can bundle up in scarves and warm coats, strolling the streets while enjoying these snacks.” He emphasized that the streets feel calmer in winter, free from the bustling heat of summer, making it the perfect setting to enjoy grilled corn and sweet potato.

Hoài spoke fondly of the waiting process for her snack, saying, “It’s like the aroma makes my stomach cry out, even though it’s only a few minutes’ wait.” The grilled corn, with its milky fragrance, buttery texture, and light sweetness, is a favorite among locals. “It’s like childhood,” said Hoài, recalling how the taste of grilled sweet potato reminded her of simpler times in the countryside, where friends would gather to share pieces of the hot, tasty vegetable.

The couple’s experience reflects a broader cultural phenomenon in Hanoi, where these snacks are not just food but an essential part of social interactions and memories. Hanoian elder Nguyễn Thị Liên, who has been selling grilled snacks for nearly 20 years, said that during winter, she sells between 500,000-700,000 VND worth of snacks daily. Her spot on the street remains busy throughout the season, with locals and travelers alike eager to taste these seasonal delicacies. Liên’s grilled corn and potato have become synonymous with Hanoi’s winter, marking the arrival of the cold season for many.

Grilled corn and sweet potato are not just snacks in Hanoi; they are a cultural experience that marks the arrival of winter. The aroma and flavors evoke memories of childhood and create a sense of warmth in the chilly city. For locals and visitors, enjoying these treats on the streets of Hanoi is more than just a culinary pleasure—it’s an integral part of the seasonal experience that captures the essence of winter in the capital.
