Public Comments on Genetically Modified Corn in Japan

In a recent development, Japan’s Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF) is collecting public comments on five genetically modified (GM) corn applications. These include modifications for resistance to pest insects, glyphosate tolerance, and other traits aimed at enhancing crop productivity and sustainability. The applications are from Corteva Agriscience Japan and Bayer CropScience, focusing on:

  1. Corteva Agriscience Japan:
    • Three applications for resistance to lepidopteran insects and tolerance to glyphosate and glufosinate herbicides.
  2. Bayer CropScience:
    • Two applications for reduced stature, glyphosate-induced male sterility, and resistance to lepidopteran and coleopteran insects.

Key Considerations and Expert Reviews

MAFF conducted thorough reviews using the application documents provided by the companies and obtained evaluations from experts on potential environmental impacts. The assessment concluded that there is no risk to biodiversity, and these modifications are expected to improve crop yields and manage pest populations effectively.

Public Participation and Impact

The public comment period allows stakeholders to voice their opinions on the GM corn applications. The MAFF will consider these comments in the approval process, which could impact the final decision regarding the commercialization of these GM crops in Japan.

The introduction of genetically modified corn into Japan’s agricultural landscape brings both opportunities and challenges. While these crops can offer significant benefits in terms of yield improvement and pest resistance, there is also concern regarding long-term environmental impacts and the preservation of biodiversity. It is crucial for both scientists and the general public to engage in informed discussions about the future of GM crops to ensure sustainable and responsible agricultural practices.
