Cosucra’s €30 Million Investment to Boost Pea Protein Production Amid Growing Global Demand

In response to the rapidly increasing demand for plant-based proteins, Belgian company Cosucra is making a significant €30 million investment in its Warcoing facility to expand pea protein production. This move will double the capacity of the company’s flagship product, Pisane®, by adding a second pea protein refining line, a new drying tower, and an additional packaging line. The expansion is scheduled to be operational by 2025, marking a significant milestone in Cosucra’s efforts to meet rising global demand for sustainable, allergen-free protein sources.

Cosucra’s commercial director, Michel Dewael, highlighted the growing importance of plant-based proteins, citing increased consumer awareness around healthier and more sustainable food choices. The company has already been experiencing annual growth of over 20% in Pisane® sales, driven by demand in sectors such as sports nutrition, medical diets, senior nutrition, vegetarian, and specialty diet markets. This rapid growth is particularly notable in North America and Europe, where pea protein is gaining ground as a viable alternative to soy protein. Meanwhile, the Asian market is also emerging as a key consumer, largely due to its preference for non-allergenic protein sources.

Pea protein’s appeal lies in its nutritional benefits, including high protein content, digestibility, and hypoallergenic properties. It has become a staple in vegan and vegetarian diets and is increasingly used in a variety of food applications, including dairy alternatives, meat substitutes, and protein supplements. As global food production trends shift towards sustainability and environmental responsibility, plant-based proteins are gaining prominence as they have a lower carbon footprint compared to animal-based proteins. Pea protein, in particular, is valued for its minimal environmental impact, requiring fewer resources such as water and fertilizers than other protein crops like soy.

The global plant-based protein market, which was estimated at 1.6 million tons in 2011, continues to expand at an accelerated pace, with pea protein becoming a major player in this growth. Projections suggest the global market for plant-based proteins will experience a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 8.4% through 2031. This trend reflects shifting consumer preferences toward healthier, more ethical food choices and the food industry’s need to cater to the rise of veganism, flexitarian diets, and lactose or gluten intolerance.

Cosucra’s investment underscores the growing significance of plant-based proteins and the company’s commitment to scaling up its operations to meet future demand. With its state-of-the-art Warcoing facility expansion, Cosucra is well-positioned to strengthen its leadership in the plant protein market, particularly in the production of allergen-free, sustainable pea protein.
