New Horizons for Soybean Cultivation in Krasnoyarsk Region: A Breakthrough in Seed Testing

Soybean cultivation has long been underrepresented in Siberian agriculture, but new trials in Krasnoyarsk show signs of change. Recently, specialists from the Krasnoyarsk branch of Rosselkhoztsentr carried out a comprehensive evaluation of soybean crops, focusing on varietal crops developed by Krasnoyarsk State Agrarian University. The test, which took place in the Sukhobuzimsky district, spanned a total area of 98.5 hectares. Four varieties were evaluated: 75 лет Победы, Zaryanitsa, EOS, and Tertia.

The Varieties Tested

The varieties, except for Tertia, are already listed in Russia’s state registry and have been approved for cultivation in Region 11, which includes Krasnoyarsk Krai. The Tertia variety is in the process of being multiplied and is currently under registration review, with its inclusion in official bulletins as a non-registered variety signaling high expectations for its future.

One of the highlights of this trial was the evaluation of seed quality, which was a key aspect of determining whether these varieties could be used for seed production. The test was conducted in strict accordance with the guidelines set by the Eurasian Economic Union, ensuring that the soybeans met the required standards for variety purity and suitability for further propagation.

Results of the Testing

Upon examination, experts confirmed that all tested fields showed a 100% varietal purity. This means that the crops adhered to the official traits of the respective varieties, such as the color and shape of pods, seeds, and other critical physical characteristics. The trial specifically looked at the maturity stage of the plants, focusing on the presence of mature pods in the lower parts of the plants.

Achieving 100% purity across all fields is particularly significant as it qualifies these fields as sources for elite and original seed production. Such high standards of quality are vital for future large-scale soybean cultivation in the region, especially considering the relatively unfamiliar nature of the crop in Krasnoyarsk.

Why Soybeans for Krasnoyarsk?

Soybeans are currently an underutilized crop in Siberia, but they hold great potential. The growing global demand for plant-based protein and soybean oil positions this legume as a strategic crop for the region. Krasnoyarsk’s climate poses challenges, but the work of the Krasnoyarsk State Agrarian University has focused on developing varieties that can adapt to these conditions, offering shorter growth cycles and resilience to the area’s weather patterns.

Soybeans also contribute to sustainable agriculture by fixing nitrogen in the soil, which can improve soil fertility for future crops. For farmers, soybeans represent a profitable diversification option that aligns with trends in both domestic and international markets.

The successful approval of new soybean varieties in Krasnoyarsk marks a significant milestone for the region’s agricultural diversification efforts. With the varietal purity confirmed and the suitability of these soybeans for seed production established, Krasnoyarsk may be poised to become an important player in Russia’s soybean market. As climate conditions continue to shift and global demand for soybeans rises, Krasnoyarsk’s strategic move to develop and test resilient, high-yield varieties could yield substantial benefits for both local farmers and the agricultural industry at large.
