Minister Valenzuela Visits Coquimbo Region Amidst Arrival of Frontal System

Government Officials Coordinate Preventive Measures in Response to Severe Weather Conditions

Santiago, June 12, 2024 – Following the declaration of a Preventive Emergency between the regions of Coquimbo and Ñuble due to the impending frontal system in these areas, the Minister of Agriculture, Esteban Valenzuela, has traveled to the Coquimbo region to monitor the situation.

The decision to mobilize government resources comes after recent heavy rains have severely impacted the Biobío region. Minister Valenzuela, who had already been in the area earlier this week to conduct agricultural assessments and provide assistance to farmers in Limari, will participate this afternoon in a Regional Coordination Meeting (Cogrid) alongside the Regional Presidential Delegate, Galo Luna, to strategize and coordinate preventive actions ahead of the anticipated rainfall.

Minister Valenzuela emphasized the dangers posed by these rains to high-altitude areas, not only in the Andes but also in the Coastal Range and central valleys. He urged farmers to move their animals away from riverbanks and to confine them in stables and henhouses. Additionally, he stressed the risk of significant damage in the high mountainous regions of the Coquimbo and Valparaíso regions due to the forecasted isotherm heights ranging from 3,500 to 4,000 meters.

The declaration of a Preventive Emergency, announced by the Vice President of the Republic, Carolina Tohá, allows for proactive decision-making and streamlines the execution of tasks, contracts, and purchases. Minister Valenzuela reassured farmers of the government’s support, citing resilience within the agricultural sector and readiness to collaborate with other ministries to manage the emergency effectively.

In addition to Minister Valenzuela, it was confirmed today that government authorities will be deployed to five other regions of the country: Minister of Social Development and Family, Javiera Toro, will remain in the Valparaíso region; Subsecretary of Defense, Ricardo Montero, will oversee operations in O’Higgins; Minister of Defense, Maya Fernández, will be present in the Maule Region; Minister of Public Works, Jessica López, will continue her duties in the Biobío Region since Tuesday; and Acting Minister of Interior and Public Safety, Manuel Monsalve, will oversee activities in the Metropolitan Region.
