HarvestPlus and CGIAR Unveil Cutting-Edge Techniques in Nutrient Analysis at ICRISAT

From August 12 to 14, 2024, HarvestPlus, in collaboration with the CGIAR Breeding and Research Service (BRS), hosted a significant three-day workshop on Elemental Analysis Services at the ICRISAT station in Patancheru, India. The event brought together 43 participants from 22 National Agricultural Research Systems (NARS), including 15 CGIAR centers, three private seed companies, three service providers, and 10 crop groups, creating a dynamic environment for sharing knowledge and innovation.

The workshop’s primary focus was on advancing the science of elemental analysis in crop breeding, with a particular emphasis on nutrition traits. Key presentations included insights from HarvestPlus CEO Arun Baral, who highlighted the organization’s pioneering work in X-ray Fluorescent (XRF) Spectrometry and Near-Infrared Spectroscopy (NIRS). These cutting-edge technologies are crucial for the evaluation of mineral and vitamin traits in crops, offering significant improvements in product screening and testing.

The advancements showcased are integral to enhancing global biofortification efforts, aiming to improve nutritional outcomes through better crop breeding techniques. The integration of XRF and NIRS technologies represents a major leap forward in accelerating the development of nutrient-rich crops, which is essential for addressing global nutritional deficiencies.
