August Freight Data Reveals a 6% Decrease Year-on-Year, But Grain Loading Holds Steady

As of September 3, 2024, data from Russian Railways (RZD) indicates a notable shift in freight activities. In August 2024, the total freight volume on the RZD network was 97.5 million tons, marking a 6% decrease compared to the same period last year. For the period from January to August 2024, the total freight volume reached 795.2 million tons, representing a 3.7% decline year-on-year.

Despite the overall drop in freight volume, the grain loading figures have shown resilience. For the first eight months of 2024, grain loading remained unchanged at 20.3 million tons, consistent with the previous year’s figures. This stability in grain loading is particularly noteworthy given the broader trend of reduced freight activity.

In contrast, the loading of chemical and mineral fertilizers saw an increase, with volumes reaching 45.1 million tons, a 7.9% rise compared to the previous year. This suggests a growing demand for fertilizers in the agricultural sector, which might be influencing the overall freight dynamics.

The steady grain loading amid a general decline highlights the importance of maintaining robust logistics and transportation networks to support the agricultural supply chain.
