Tumen County, located in China’s renowned “Golden Corn Belt,” is witnessing an impressive harvest of fresh corn this season. The region’s concerted efforts to expand and modernize its corn production are setting new standards in agricultural quality and economic viability.

Expanding Fresh Corn Production

The fresh corn harvest is in full swing in Tumen County, particularly in Jin Dou Korean and Manchu Township, where fields are lush with well-developed corn. Local farmers, working under clear skies, are busy picking, bagging, and transporting the freshly harvested corn to processing facilities.

This year, Tumen County has expanded its fresh corn cultivation to over 13,000 acres through a collaborative model involving more than 2,000 local households. According to Yu Shilong, General Manager of Tumen Shengchang Food Co., Ltd., the “contract farming” model, where contracts are signed before planting, ensures both farmer income and company development.

Farmers like Sun Jiacheng are benefiting significantly from this model. By growing fresh corn instead of traditional varieties, he earns an additional 300 to 400 RMB per acre. Post-harvest, he also has the opportunity to work for the processing company, earning 200 RMB a day.

Economic and Market Impact

Fresh corn stands out for its superior flavor and early harvest, which is nearly a month ahead of conventional corn crops. This early harvest allows for quicker market entry and higher returns. Tumen County’s fresh corn is praised for its sweet and tender qualities, which contribute to its growing popularity in both domestic and international markets.

The county’s fresh corn industry has seen substantial growth. The Tumen Shengchang Food Co., Ltd. processes fresh corn into various products, including fresh and frozen varieties. With an expected yield of over 30 million ears this year, the company not only meets domestic demand but also exports to over ten countries.

Currently, Tumen County’s fresh corn production spans eight townships with seven significant processing enterprises. In 2023, the county processed 320 million ears of fresh corn, generating over 450 million RMB in total output value. For 2024, the county plans to expand its planting area to 150,000 acres, benefiting more than 30,000 farmers.

Tumen County’s success with fresh corn underscores a broader trend towards high-value, specialized agriculture. By leveraging a combination of modern practices and collaborative models, the region is transforming its agricultural sector and driving economic growth. This approach not only enhances farmer income but also contributes to the modernization of the agricultural industry and supports rural revitalization.
