Extension Expected to Impact Wheat Distribution and Pricing

The Indian government is poised to extend the Bharat Atta scheme beyond its original end date of June 30, 2024. This extension comes as part of ongoing efforts to stabilize wheat prices and ensure food security amid fluctuating market conditions.

Key Highlights of the Scheme Extension:

  1. Price Adjustments: Under the extended scheme, the Maximum Retail Price (MRP) for Bharat Atta has been set at Rs. 30 per kilogram. The effective issue price for wheat will be Rs. 20.65 per kilogram, incorporating a subsidy of Rs. 2.35 per kilogram. This adjustment is aimed at making wheat more affordable for consumers and controlling rising prices.
  2. Distribution Quantities: Although the specific quantity to be distributed under the extended scheme has not yet been finalized, the previous scheme saw approximately 1.47 lakh metric tonnes of wheat distributed by May 15, 2024. The continuation of this initiative is expected to contribute significantly to managing wheat availability and price stability in the market.
  3. Impact on Market Prices: The extension of the Bharat Atta scheme is anticipated to have a stabilizing effect on wheat prices. By maintaining controlled prices and ensuring a steady supply of wheat, the scheme aims to mitigate the impact of rising costs on consumers and support food security.
  4. Government Strategy: This decision reflects the government’s commitment to addressing food inflation and ensuring equitable access to staple foods. The Bharat Atta scheme plays a crucial role in supporting vulnerable populations and maintaining market equilibrium.
