Investment to Boost R&D in Cutting-Edge Agricultural Technologies

Syngenta has announced a significant investment of €9.6 million to enhance its research and development (R&D) capabilities in El Ejido, Spain. The planned expansion and modernization of its facilities are expected to solidify the region’s position as a global leader in agricultural innovation.

José Manuel Zapata, director of Syngenta’s research centers in Almeria and Murcia, emphasized the positive impact of this investment: “This investment will give new life to Almeria’s rural environment and strengthen the province’s already recognized international leadership in the development of cutting-edge technologies in plant breeding and protection.”

This investment follows a previous commitment of €2.4 million announced last year for expanding Syngenta’s R&D centers in Almeria and Murcia. With the latest funding, Syngenta aims to further promote innovation in agricultural technologies that enhance productivity and ensure sustainable profits for producers.

The new Plant Innovation Center will feature state-of-the-art facilities and expand research activities on various crops, including leafy vegetables, tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, zucchinis, and melons. Research will be conducted in both greenhouse and open field environments, aiming to establish the center as a global leader in these areas.

The announcement, made at El Ejido Town Hall, was met with enthusiasm by local officials. Mayor Francisco Góngora expressed his optimism: “It is great news that a leading international company has decided to build this innovation center in Spain, and specifically in El Ejido.”

With a history spanning over 150 years, Syngenta is a world leader in plant breeding and improvement. The company has the most extensive international presence in the sector, with research teams operating in more than 60 countries, driving innovations worldwide.
