Farmers in South Jeolla Province (Jeonnam), South Korea, are set to benefit from the distribution of 122.6 tons of government-certified barley and rye seeds, according to Jeonnam Agricultural Research and Extension Services. The distribution includes four popular barley varieties and one rye variety, aiming to boost crop yields across the province through the use of high-purity seeds that ensure robust growth and strong initial development.
The barley varieties being distributed include the widely favored white glutinous barley, which accounts for the largest share at 74.56 tons, followed by new barley at 27.2 tons, nurichal barley at 7.94 tons, and jaeanchal barley at 4.96 tons. Additionally, 7.94 tons of the rye variety “Gokwoo” will be supplied to farmers. These seeds are available for order through local agricultural technology centers until August 27 and will be distributed through the National Agricultural Cooperative Federation (Nonghyup).
The seeds are packaged in 20 kg bags, with farmers needing an estimated 13 kg of barley seeds per 10 ares (1,000 square meters) of land. The pricing for these government-certified seeds varies slightly depending on whether the seeds have been treated with fungicides or not. Non-treated white barley seeds are priced at 36,040 KRW per bag, while rye is available at 48,580 KRW per bag. Fungicide-treated barley seeds are slightly more expensive, priced at 37,760 KRW per bag.
Government-certified seeds offer significant advantages over farm-saved seeds. They undergo strict testing and quality control to ensure that their purity and genetic characteristics are maintained, leading to higher germination rates and stronger early-stage growth. On average, certified seeds can yield about 12% more than seeds saved by farmers from previous harvests, making them a valuable investment for boosting farm productivity.
